Developed to cater for all levels of experience with focus on individual goals
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is everything we do. That's our passion, what we specialise in, what we teach every day. Our Adults Program focuses on Fundamental (GB1) and Advanced (GB2) classes. Let's take you through it!
GB1: THE FUNDAMENTALS
Welcome to your introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). We understand walking into a completely new environment filled with people you have never met before can be intimidating. Please understand every one of us at Gracie Barra Kiama are here to improve ourselves and support others in doing the same.
Our Fundamentals class (GB1) is available for all ages, genders, and abilities - no experience required.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AT THE GB1 CLASS?
We will teach you the core fundamental techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a supportive environment, keeping you safe and fostering a positive learning experience. During this stage of training, it is common to experience a positive shift in overall fitness and physical health, as well as improved sleep, energy, and concentration. In addition to these incredible physical benefits, learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu enables students to significantly improve their mental strength through increased resilience, perseverance and self-confidence.
GB²: ADVANCED JIU JITSU
After a few months of learning the foundations of BJJ, you will be promoted to our advanced class. Here, you will build upon the basics and begin to find your flow and develop your game, while having more sparring time and no-gi classes. It is at this stage that some students also start engaging in competitions.
This is also when students begin to challenge themselves not only within a physical sense but also from a mental perspective. Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that heavily emphasises sharp technique over brute strength. This being the basis of Jiu Jitsu, students are strongly encouraged to use their minds and think ahead before they make a move.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY JIU JITSU JOURNEY AT GRACIE BARRA KIAMA?
We understand that starting Martial Arts can be challenging and if you are new to this, you probably have lots of questions. Below we cover some of the many benefits you will gain when you start training BJJ. We also have a FAQ page to cover the most common questions.
You will be comfortable with the uncomfortable
As you advance in your Jiu Jitsu journey you will notice it is not uncommon to experience feelings of pressure and frustration, however, it is how we deal with these feelings that will make us stronger, more developed fighters. Our coaches create a safe learning environment to guide our students through these feelings, teaching them to remain resilient and persevere through the challenge. The idea is to learn to remain calm in a pressure situation and work hard to gain a position they want to be in.
These are lessons learned on the mat which can be carried over into everyday life.
You will make new friends and be part of a community
Our community at Gracie Barra Kiama is second to none. Every member respects, embraces, and encourages all other members of the academy. Whether you are completely new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or are coming from another gym, you will be welcomed as one of our own. Over our existence we have developed a very safe, positive, team-based environment. This helps every member of Gracie Barra Kiama succeed in achieving their goals!
You will feel safe
As a non-violent martial art, students of Gracie Barra Kiama can head into each class knowing their safety is of the most importance. We begin each class with warm-up drills and stretches so our students are ready to hit the mat and learn technique principles from our instructors. While training, we treat our training partner's safety as if it’s our own, giving us the ability to train hard without the fear of being hurt.
You will get fit and improve your health
There is no doubt about that! Brazilian Jiu Jitsu helps build functional body strength, grip strength, an improved cardiovascular system without you even realising! Before you even know it, you will be improving your physical health and training capacity helping you become better on the mat and in everyday life.
Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also incredibly beneficial for mental strength and fitness. It is no secret Jiu Jitsu is a challenging martial art… in the best way possible! You will be faced with obstacles, however, how you overcome those obstacles is when you develop your mental strength, resilience, and persistence. It is a perfect sport for stress relief and overall mental outlet. Over time, you will notice the principles learned through training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu become evident in everyday life, such as better handling stress and your daily emotions.
You will learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Most importantly, you will learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the fastest growing martial art in Australia and arguably in the world. You will learn with professors that have been training BJJ for more than 20 years in Brazil, and you will love it!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Have some questions about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? We answer the most common ones below. If you want to know more about this incredible martial art and book a trial, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Will I get hurt by BJJ training?
Will I think about quitting?
Yes. This is completely normal and the majority of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students will consider quitting at least once if not more during their training career. What separates the good from the great, those that see real results in mind, body, and spirit and those that don’t is the individual’s ability to persist. To overcome challenges and look adversity right in the face and say ‘I will not let this stop me’. It is on the other side of challenge, fear, and intimidation that tremendous results lie.
How long does it take to progress in Jiu Jitsu?
As with anything, the more you practise the better you get. How quickly you progress through the BJJ ranks will be determined by how consistently you are able to train. This does not mean training once or twice per week is ineffective. In fact, the person who comes to a class once a week, every week, will make far more progress than the student that comes to classes three or four times in a week once a month. Be consistent, show up for yourself and you will find yourself making incredible amounts of progress.
